Reprint of eleven newspaper articles that urge reform of prisons and the S.C. penal system; series appeared in a Greenville, S.C., newspaper beginning 6 Mar. 1967; essays discuss conditions and treatment of prisoners at state and county levels; includes letter, 27 Sept. 2003, in which Morris notes impact of the stories. Topics discussed include life in work camps and on chain gangs; prison facilities in Counties of Anderson, Greenville, and Pickens; reports from prisoners that state facilities offered better treatment and rehabilitiation opportunities than those at the county level; and results of survey compeleted by 42 of S.C.'s 46 counties in which officials reported number of prisoners in each camp, annual budget, salary for guards, use of chains, extent of recreational facilities, etc. Morris urges his readers to support "House Bill 1288 for state inspections of prisons and jails"; state leaders and organizations active in the movement for prison reform in S.C. include the Alston Wilkes Society, Rex L. Carter, Judge Frank Eppes, and Wayne Cooper. Includes letter, 27 Sept. 2003, in which Morrison reports that 3000 copies of this reprint were distributed nationwide and in United Kingdom, and that director of S.C. Prisons, Ellis C. MacDougall, considered that this series was "'significantly' responsible for the changes from a chain-gang system to the more efficient and humane prisons in the U.S."
